Visit St Michael’s Flags & Angel Meadow Park, a serene site rich in history with artful reflections of its past as a 19th-century burial ground.

Our Review

St Michael’s Flags & Angel Meadow Park in Manchester is a park steeped in historical and social significance, reflecting a darker period of the city’s history. Originally serving as a burial ground in the 19th century, this area was the final resting place for approximately 40,000 individuals, many of whom were impoverished and victims of the industrial era’s harsh conditions.

Today, the park has been transformed into a tranquil public space, yet it retains elements of its somber past through the remaining gravestones and monuments that dot the landscape. These historical markers serve as a poignant reminder of the lives of those who helped shape the industrial spirit of Manchester.

In addition to its historical elements, St Michael’s Flags & Angel Meadow Park is enhanced by various art installations that provoke thought and reflection, contributing to the contemplative atmosphere. The park’s grassy areas offer a serene escape from the urban bustle, making it a popular spot for relaxation and leisure activities among locals and visitors alike.

The transformation of this site from a densely packed burial ground to a revitalized public park is a testament to Manchester’s ability to honor its past while looking towards the future, making St Michael’s Flags & Angel Meadow Park a unique blend of history, art, and community life.

This park is a small peaceful oasis on the outskirts of Manchester City Centre. It's not exactly full of spectacular scenery but it's green space with trees and for the most part, peaceful.
