Our Review

The Arch of Chinatown in Manchester stands as a symbolic gateway to one of the city’s most vibrant and culturally rich neighborhoods. Erected in 1987, the arch serves as a prominent landmark, welcoming visitors to explore the bustling streets and diverse offerings of Manchester’s Chinatown.

The history of Chinatown in Manchester dates back to the late 19th century when Chinese sailors and merchants began to settle in the area, primarily around Faulkner Street and the surrounding streets. Over the years, the community grew, establishing businesses, restaurants, and cultural institutions that have since become integral parts of the city’s fabric.

The construction of the arch was a collaborative effort between the city council and the local Chinese community, intended to celebrate and honor the contributions of Manchester’s Chinese residents to the city’s cultural and economic landscape. The arch’s design incorporates traditional Chinese architectural elements, including intricate carvings and vibrant colors, symbolizing unity, prosperity, and good fortune.

Today, the Arch of Chinatown serves as more than just a physical landmark; it represents the enduring spirit of Manchester’s multicultural identity and the strength of its diverse communities. It stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural exchange, welcoming visitors from all backgrounds to experience the vibrant energy and rich heritage of Chinatown.

As a focal point of the neighborhood, the arch continues to be a source of pride for both the Chinese community and the city as a whole, embodying the spirit of unity and collaboration that defines Manchester’s multicultural landscape.

Lunar new-year. Dragon procession crowds absolutely huge and walking past the Chinese arch was a virtual standstill. But it was all in good humour and there weren't any problems.

It is very cool when you don't know you are about to get to China Town and you find yourself in front of it. It is as in his majesty would like to invite you inside the little chinese streets. The surrounding area is full of Chinese restaurants and not only. And there's a small little patio where you can seat and relax.
